Book of Hafsa – Chapter Nine

First Blood

As whispers spread through the harem after the suspicious “accident” of another concubine, Liana begins to understand the darker side of court life: the evil eyes lurks in every corner (an ancient belief that harm through envy, jealousy, resentment, or even excessive admiration can befall someone.)

But despite every attempt to remain unnoticed, Şehzade Selim refuses to let her disappear into the background. When she is finally summoned before him, the chapter transforms into something almost dreamlike and mythic, blurring the line between fear, power, femininity, and awakening desire.

At its heart, this chapter is about transformation. Of identity itself. Liana realizes she can no longer remain a hidden girl lingering safely at the edges of palace life. Whether she wishes it or not, the harem has begun to pull her into its center.

The Book of Hafsa is a historical fiction novel (by me) following the life of Hafsa Sultan, the consort of Selim I and the mother of Suleiman the Magnificent. Set during the rise of the Ottoman Empire, the story explores palace politics, dynastic paranoia, love, survival, and the hidden world of the imperial harem through Hafsa’s own eyes.
